Cosmetic welding can repair a number of possible scenarios in the foundry -- chisel or blade marks from gate & riser removal, sand inclusion, or a miss-run. A simple cosmetic weld repair, followed by heat treatment and X-ray, fixes the casting.

Sounds straight-forward, yet sometimes engineers put a note on a drawing stating, "No weld repair." Perhaps they are referring to structural fixes, yet they are also excluding cosmetic repairs, which drives up the costs and delays timing.
